Description

Religious costumes - RABELLI (Giacomo Carlo, pseud. of Jacques-Charles BAR ). Monastic and religious masquerades from all the nations of the globe. Paris, s. n., an II, 1793. In-8 (19.8 x 12 cm), XXIV-254 pp. half olive calf, ribbed spine decorated with gilt and cold fleurons, fawn title page, marbled edges (binding circa 1820). Rare first edition with 26 plates of monastic costumes hand-colored by the author. The only volume published out of 5 or 6 announced. Etching and wash engraver Jacques-Charles Bar had begun work on a monumental Recueil de tous les costumes des ordres religieux et militaires in 1778. During the Revolution, he took the name of Barelli and adapted his work under the title Mascarades monastiques. The dedication to the French Republic gives the impression: "It is to you, my compatriots, the regenerated French, that I pay homage to my work [...]. I invoke the truth, by making you review all these bisarral institutions that greed, directed by ignorance, has decorated with the mask of piety; but the times of prestiges are over: you will see the thing without its mask; it will appear to you in all its deformity". Engraved armorial bookplate of Théodore de Jonghe (1801-1860), Belgian bibliophile. Spine slightly faded, small black stain on spine and upper spine, a few small brown spots, otherwise a very good copy. (Cohen, col. 111; Brunet, IV, col. 1070-1071; Quérard, VII, p. 417. Colas, no. 210).
