Horatio Gates Revolutionary War-Dated Document Signed

Former British soldier (1727-1806) who served as an American general during the Revolutionary War, controversially taking credit for the victory at Saratoga. Revolutionary War-dated manuscript DS, one page, 7.5 x 6.5, April 27, 1779. Pay order directing a quartermaster to "Pay unto Capt. William Pierce Seven Hundred & Sixty Four Dollars—being for his pay as Capt. of Artillery from ye 1st day of November 1778 to the 1st of May 1779—6 months—also—for retained rations—& attendance as Judge Advocat[e] to that time." Signed at the conclusion by Horatio Gates, and countersigned by his aide-de-camp, "By the General's Command, Isaac Pierce, A.d.Camp." Additionally endorsed by William Pierce to confirm receipt of payment in full; also endorsed by Pierce on the reverse, below an itemized accounting of the payment. Professionally inlaid into a larger sheet and in very good condition, with some minor loss to the trimmed edges, and heavy overall staining affecting only appearance. Accompanied by an engraved portrait of Gates on horseback.
