John B. Gordon Civil War-Dated Endorsement Signed

Confederate general (1832-1904) who surrendered Lee's army to Union general Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain at Appomattox Court House. Civil War-dated endorsement signature, "J. B. Gordon," on a document wrapper, 3.25 x 7.75, February 22, 1865, pertaining to a certificate of disability "for detail in Arsenal at Selma, Ala. in the case of Priv. W. W. Chavers, Co. G, 6th Ala." Further endorsed by Walter H. Taylor, aide-de-camp to Robert E. Lee, writing: "This soldier has had some experience in making fuzes at the Selma Arsenal—can he me made useful in any of the Or'ce shops in Virginia?" Below, Josiah Gorgas, the Confederate chief of ordnance who developed the South's military manufacturing capability, signs an endorsement requesting that the soldier be ordered to report to Lt. Col. W. L. Brown. Also endorsed on the opposite side by Brown and others. In fine condition. Accompanied by a document from the Danville Arsenal, March 1865, endorsed by Col. R. E. Withers and Maj. E. S. Hutter.
