Description

Attributed to Pierre Puget, French 1620-1694- Warships at sea, engaged in a skirmish; oil on canvas, 17.8 x 26.4 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Puget's distinctive marine scenes are often characterised by a bright colour palette and a highly-detailed, somewhat stylised approach, particularly in the crisp rendition of the vessels. This is evident in the artist's painting of the 'Battle of Palermo' in the collection of the Museo Naval, Madrid, and also in another depiction of 'A Naval Engagement at Sea' which was previously recorded at the Rafael Valls Gallery, London. The composition of the present work resembles a strikingly similar study of vessels at sea in pen and ink at the Musée Bonnat-Helleu in Bayonne.
