After Giovanni Battista Crespi, called Il Cerano, Italian 1573-1632- Saint Francis in Ecstasy; oil on canvas, 99.5 x 67 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present work is a version of Crespi's depiction of Saint Francis, currently held by the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan [no.4970], with some variations. Crespi was a significant force in Milanese Counter-Reformation painting, often depicting religious subjects with realism and humanity, which imparts his works with a particular potency and emotive charge.
