Face mask kpelié. Senufo, Ivory Coast. H 29cm. In typical form, with remnants of blue paint and shiny dark brown patina. With original invoice from Native! The kpelié mask is one of the most famous Senufo masks. It is also one of the most danced masks, made of wood or metal (rare), with one or two faces and is used at funeral ceremonies. One of the many legends says that the two curved cylindrical elements below the cheeks (the feet) are supposed to keep the mask on the ground. It is widespread far beyond its presumed original area, the homeland of the Senufo, albeit in a somewhat modified form: In the east among the Jimini and Ligbi and is also used by the Dioula - together with other masks - in connection with Islamic holidays. DAN, IVORY COAST. Dan mask, Ivory Coast. The harmony of Dan masks, summed up here in this late work. The softness of the modeling is matched by the elongated oval of the face with its naturalized features, the rounded forehead, prominent cheekbones and full lips magnifying the overall beauty. A fine, slightly raised median ridge linked to the triangular nose divides the forehead and face into two parts. The finely and delicately engraved eyebrow arches, following gentle curves, intensify the expressiveness, while the eyes, signified by two linear incisions, lend the mask an interiority. BAOULE, IVORY COAST. Weaving loom stirrup. With its schematized features, the face of this zoomorphic figure presents a profound expression of serenity, rendered by its large, closed eyelids, magnified by fine eyebrow arches linked to a long, slender nose. The face leans back slightly, the small rectangular mouth hollowed out, reinforcing the impression of deep sleep. The figure's forehead has a light, honey-brown patina, attesting to the multiple rubs. The entire stylized body is decorated with engraved geometric motifs. Wood, plant fibers, iron. A late work, carved in light wood with darker shades, the long, emaciated neck announces an oval face with pronounced features; the naturalistic nose, with flared nostrils, is skilfully linked to the superciliary arches.
