L'ESCALIER DE CRISTAL, INKWELL, NAPOLEON III PERIOD in ebony, enamel and gilt bronze. The top is bordered by a filleted ingot mould and rests on four heels. It holds two receptacles with chinoisant decoration, one lined with a domed lid with a foliate knob to hold ink, the other with a cup for sand to hold pens. Signed below "ESCALIER DE CRISTAL/PARIS". (Two small cracks, accidents, missing parts and wear). An inkwell, by Escalier de Cristal, Napoleon III period, 19th century HEIGHT. 11 - WIDTH. 38 - PROF. 20 CM - H. 4,3 - W. 15 - D. 7,9 IN. Founded in 1802 by Mme Désarnaud, the luxury store Maison À L'Escalier de Cristal supplied lamps, clocks and other objets d'art to the ruling families of Europe. The company took part in the Exposition des Produits de l'Industrie in 1819, and was named the King's patented supplier that same year. Located in the Palais Royal, a center of excellence for jewelers, goldsmiths and manufacturers of the high-quality Objets de Vertu for which Paris is famous. The workshop commissions individual pieces from manufacturers, which are then assembled according to its own models. It enjoyed great success throughout the century, collaborating with designers and manufacturers such as Gallé and Christofle, until its demise in 1923.
