Description

Gabriele Bella, 1730 Venedig – 1799 ebenda

FESTIVAL AT THE RIALTO BRIDGE IN VENICE Oil on canvas. 62.5 x 91 cm. Attribution to the painter courtesy of Dario Succi. The Venetian vedutist created his views in an emphatically individual style of simplification. Not much is known about his life; he only became a member of the painters' guild in 1760. He worked in the greater Venice area, with the majority of his paintings documenting festivities or historical events, such as the "Frozen Lagoon", the "Council of Ten in the Doge's Palace", "The Last Carnival Day in St. Mark's Square" or "Bullfighting on the Rialto Bridge". Gabriele Bella's interest was therefore not in depicting views of the city, like most of the vedutists, but above all in depicting festive events and political and religious ceremonies. This made him a valuable documenter of the history of the city of Venice. The present painting also documents a festive event, with the splendor of the uniformly dressed gondoliers, the onlookers in the windows and the crowds on the bridge. 67 works by the painter are housed in the Pinacoteca Querini Stampalia. Andrea Querini ordered some of his paintings for his weekend residence in Santi Quaranta in Treviso, while others come from the Giustinian family collection. A.R. Not much is known about the artist; he lived and worked in the area around Venice and mainly painted buildings and city life. He was also valued as a documenter of Venetian festivals. Bella is said to have drowned in one of the canals in 1799. (1400682) (3) (11) Gabriele Bella, 1730 Venice - 1799 ibid. FESTIVAL AT THE RIALTO BRIDGE IN VENICE Oil on canvas. 62.5 x 91 cm.
