Francesco Tironi, um 1745 Venedig – 1797 Bologna, zugeschrieben VIEW OF THE CAMPO SANTI GIOVANNI E PAOLO IN VENICE Oil on canvas. Doubled. 54 x 73 cm. In gilded frame with ornamental relief. The richly populated square with the equestrian statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni in the foreground can be seen, with the famous church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo behind it. The magnificent early Venetian Renaissance façade in the background belongs to the Scuola Grande di San Rocco. To the left of the square is the Grand Canal, which is navigated by a gondola and to which steps lead down, which are summarized here. On the left side of the picture, various houses can be seen with awnings lowered to protect them from the strong sunlight. Popular city view of Venice, under a high light blue sky with white cloud formations. According to the consignor, the attribution to Tironi was confirmed by Dario Succi. The painter was almost forgotten before Hermann Voss made him famous again in 1927/28 with his work on the vedute of Venice. Not much is known about the painter's biography; he probably came from a family from Friuli. In addition to general views and city vedutas of generally famous squares, Tironi's work often depicts more intimate parts of the city or individual buildings, whereby the beige-brown color scheme is usually typical of his works.
