Giambettino Cignaroli

Giambettino Cignaroli (VERONA 1706 - 1770). Madonna and Child, Saint Anne and Saint John. The painting is a replica of the monumental painting executed in 1754 for the church of Santa Barbara (Salesas Reales) in Madrid requested by Queen Maria Barbara of Braganza (1711-1758), wife of Ferdinand IV of Spain. A further autograph version of the work is known in small print exhaled at Munich, Hampel, September 24, 2020 (formerly Cologne, Lempertz, May 30, 2020), which is related here to the model sent to the queen as recalled by Cignaroli in a letter dated February 3, 1759, believed to be missing today. The painting executed for the Madrid church is counted among one of the painter's masterpieces and was considered by critics of the time to be the best work among all the other altarpieces commissioned for the new church from the most important painters of the time (Marcantonio Franceschi, Solimena, Corrado Giaquinto, etc.).
