Eugène-Samuel-Auguste Fromentin (La Rochelle, 1820 - La Rochelle, 1876) Dead Arab Study for the character on the left in Le Pays de la soif, circa 1869 (Paris, Musée d'Orsay) Black pencil and graphite 21.9 x 38.9 cm On verso, on the old backboard, a label inscribed in pen and ink: n°36 Provenance : - Sale after the artist's death (2nd part), Paris, Hôtel Drouot, Me Pillet, February 2-3, 1877, lot 368, sold for 200 francs to "Verdé Delisle" (studio sale stamp lower right with handwritten number 353, Lugt 957); -Adolphe Verdé-Delisle (1831-1879), lace merchant; -Sa vente après-décès, Paris, Hôtel Drouot, Me Pillet, May 29-30, 1879, lot 98. This drawing was acquired at the artist's post-death sale by Adolphe Verdé-Delisle (1831-1879), a great admirer of the artist, who also bought the painting he was preparing, now in the Musée d'Orsay.
