Description

Marble tondo carved in high relief depicting the right profile portrait of Pope Innocent XI; inscription INNOCENCIVS .XI. P[ontifex].O.M[aximus]. Venice, workshop of Giovanni Bonazza (Venice, 1674 - Padua, 1736), late 17th century D. 30 cm (slight wear) This portrait of Innocent XI, pope from 1676 to 1689, probably takes as its model a profile such as that popularized by the Roman medallist Giovanni Martino Hamerani (1646-1705), employed in the papal workshop (fig.). In terms of workmanship, this marble tondo can be compared to the bas-reliefs produced by the workshop of the Venetian and Paduan sculptor Giovanni Bonazza, with particular reference to the numerous sculpted marble profiles preserved in Padua's Civic Museum.
