Carved boxwood Christ. Head bent towards the right shoulder, wavy hair with locks resting on the shoulders, bifid beard ending in small tight curls, imploring eyes with circumflex arches, small half-open mouth, perizonium held by a strap leaving the right leg uncovered, lateral fall, juxtaposed feet resting on a suppedaneum. Flanders, attributed to Pieter Scheemaeckers the Elder (Antwerp, 1652 - Arendonck, 1714), second half of the 17th century H. 35 cm Base (perizonium and fingers missing) This beautiful boxwood Christ displays the elegant, delicate and original craftsmanship of Antwerp sculptor Pieter Scheemaeckers the Elder, notably in the treatment of the face with its imploring expression of great sensitivity, the suppleness of the hair, the elongation of the fingers and the carefully rendered joints and nails of the toes. A figure of the late Baroque, this sculptor enjoyed great renown among his contemporaries, as evidenced by his numerous works, notably in the civil and religious monuments of Antwerp.
