August 9, 1867 - August 12, 1869 The correspondence concerns the work of Virgil, a constant object of study by Sainte-Beuve, who had already published in 1857 the Étude sur Virgile, which arose from his lectures at the Ecole normale superior in Paris. Eugène Benoist, 1831 - 1887, one of the most influential French Latinists of the nineteenth century, had just brought out the complete works of Virgil, in three volumes (Paris, Hachette, 1867). 1. He communicates that he has just written to him in Dresden to apologize. Asks Benoist to write to him in turn to tell him that "je reparerai ma faute a une prochaine reimpression." 5.
