Lot 98 - [CRÉBILLON fils]. LE SOPHA, moral tale. A Gaznah, De l'Imprimerie du Très-Pieux, Très-Clément & Très-Auguste Sultan des Indes, L'an de l'Hegire, M.C.XX [Paris, Prault, 1742]. T. 1: (3) ff. 298 pp. - Vol. 2: (3) ff. 264 pp. Small leather loss at one spine, 3 damaged headbands. FIRST PUBLIC EDITION of this GALANT TALE with its oriental setting, now considered a CLASSIC OF EROTIC LITERATURE and Crébillon's masterpiece. Written in 1737, published clandestinely in 1740, it was first published in 1742 and immediately became a scandal. Condemned to three months' exile from Paris because the Dukes of Richelieu and Nivernais recognized themselves in his tale, even though some believe they identify Louis XV in the ridiculous and amusing character of Sultan Schah-Baha, Crébillon remained unpublished for twelve years. CHARMING EXEMPLAIRE, WITH GOLDEN ARMS by Vincent-Étienne ROUJAULT (1696-1770), president of the Parlement de Paris in 1721. ¶ Tchémerzine, II-683 - OHR, 1147 - [CRÉBILLON fils]. TANSAI ET NÉADARNÉ.
