MOLIÈRE. LES OEUVRES de Monsieur de Molière, Reveuës, corrigées & augmentées. Enrichies de Figures en Taille-douce. P., Thierry, Barbin et Trabouillet, 1682. Eight volumes in-12 blue violet morocco, boards decorated with gilt frames, gilt corner irons and large central finial, ornate ribbed spines, gilt title and tomaison, place of publication and date on tail, inner border, threaded edges and headpieces, gilt edges (L. Tripon). Triangular bookplate "Paul Adam". Spines uniformly darkened in navy blue, main body carefully washed with occasional loss of contrast to some engravings, some old handwritten notations. FIRST FULL COLLECTIVE EDITION, partly original and THE FIRST ILLUSTRATION. It was published immediately after Molière's death by the actors of his troupe, Vinot and La Grange, who provided stage directions. It contains 30 FIGURES engraved by J. Sauvé after P. Brissart. Each comedy is preceded by an engraving, particularly valuable for character attitudes and costumes. THIS EDITION IS DIVIDED INTO TWO DISTINCT PARTS. The first comprises six volumes of plays already printed during the author's lifetime. At the head of the 1st volume is the IMPORTANT 16-page PREFACE, the FIRST RECITAL OF MOLIÈRE'S LIFE. The second part, consisting of volumes VII and VIII entitled OEuvres posthumes, contains in ORIGINAL EDITION all the plays performed but not yet printed at Molière's death: Dom Garcie de Navarre, L'Impromptu de Versailles, Dom Juan, Mélicerte, Les Amants magnifiques and La Comtesse d'Escarbagnas. At the end of vol. VIII is L'Ombre de Molière, a play by Marcoureau de Brécourt. A beautiful copy of this precious edition, preserved in a fine, elegant morocco binding by L.
