Two volumes in-4, marbled fawn calf, gilt frame on covers, smooth spine cloisonné with gilt fillets, garnet-red morocco title and appendix, red edges (period binding). Small lack of gilding on one cover. FIRST EDITION. 8 folding engraved plates (including 2 tables). A volume III will be published in 1800 to complete this work under the title Traité des différences et des séries. Copy in GOOD CONDITION.

Small leather chips on two spines and one headpiece, minor superficial blemishes on boards, not serious. Very good condition inside (endpapers missing from volume 1). The copy is complete with 136 plates. The book offers a playful approach to mathematics, with a number of entertaining problems and new calculation techniques such as "finger multiplication". This edition is considered the most relevant to date, and includes a treatise on elementary clocks by Domenico Martinelli, a long dissertation on perpetual lamps and, above all, "gibecière tricks" (Wikipedia).
