LAPÈNE (Ed.). MILITARY EVENTS BEFORE TOULOUSE, in 1814. P., Ridan, 1822. In-8 ½ tan speckled basane, smooth cloisonné spine (Binding of the period). Dark stain at head of spine, paper missing from 1st board. RARE ORIGINAL EDITION of this account of the last battle of the Spanish campaign, which took place at the gates of Toulouse on April 10, 1814. It saw a 42,000-strong Napoleonic army, led by Marshal Soult, confront an Anglo-Hispano-Portuguese coalition of 52,000 soldiers under the command of the Marquis of Wellington. It contains a large fold-out PLAN engraved by Ambroise Tardieu, enhanced in color. ¶ Tulard, 837: "Accounts of the campaigns in the South of France are few and far between. Hence the interest of this work by an artillery captain under Taupin, who took part in the battle of Toulouse."
