Null DIDEROT and D'ALEMBERT. ENCYCLOPÉDIE, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences…
Description

DIDEROT and D'ALEMBERT. ENCYCLOPÉDIE, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des Arts et des Métiers, par une Société de gens de Lettres. Genève, Pellet, 1777-80. 41 volumes in-4 marbled fawn calf, ornate ribbed spine, morocco title-pieces, red edges (period binding) - 3 volumes of plates: bound in ½ tan basane, smooth spine cloisonné and ornate, title-pieces, red speckled edges (period binding). Some damage to headpieces, volume 35 missing at foot with the 1st blank f. and false-title f. detached and inner hinge partly open, tomonnage golds partly faded. Volume 4 of the text comes from another series with different binding irons and title-piece, volume 35 in duplicate with a body in good condition and missing binding covers. THIRD EDITION OF THIS MONUMENTAL PUBLICATION. It comprises 38/39 volumes: 35/36 volumes of text [LACKING volume 32] and 3 volumes of plates. The copy also contains 5/6 volumes of analytical table [MISSING volume 2] which were printed in Lyon in 1780 and are often missing (cf. Tchemerzine); these volumes are not mentioned by Brunet. The illustrations include TWO PORTRAITS, one by Diderot, the other by d'Alembert, both drawn by Cochin and engraved by Cathelin, as well as nearly 500 copper engravings reproduced in 423 plates, many of which are folding or double-page plates; a few folding out-of-text tables are scattered throughout the text volumes. This edition includes corrections and additions to the articles in the Paris edition. It also includes new articles, indicated by the letters "A.N.". These articles were not included in either the Dictionary or the Supplements. The authors of the articles are indicated by letters whose key is given in the first pages of volume 7. We learn that the letter "o" corresponds to the Marquis de Condorcet, while the letter "S" is attributed to Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The final volume of text, volume 36, contains additions to a number of articles, and eulogies by some of the contributors to this work, including Montesquieu, Du Marsais, Lenglet Du Fresnoy and Edme Mallet. A GOOD EXAMPLE in contemporary binding, which will need to be supplemented by the 2 MISSING volumes (volume 32 of text and volume 2 of text supplement).
