Two volumes in-12 in brown calf, arms stamped in gold in the center of the boards, ornate ribbed spines, red morocco title-pieces, red edges (Binding of the period). T. 1: (3) ff. 298 pp. - Vol. 2: (3) ff. 264 pp. Small leather loss at one spine, 3 damaged headbands. FIRST PUBLIC EDITION of this GALANT TALE with its oriental setting, now considered a CLASSIC OF EROTIC LITERATURE and Crébillon's masterpiece. Written in 1737, published clandestinely in 1740, it was first published in 1742 and immediately became a scandal. Condemned to three months' exile from Paris because the Dukes of Richelieu and Nivernais recognized themselves in his tale, even though some believe they identify Louis XV in the ridiculous and amusing character of Sultan Schah-Baha, Crébillon remained unpublished for twelve years.
