(149 X 210 mm). Small paper loss without damage to the text. THE CAMPAIGN OF NAPOLEON I IN SPAIN. INTERESTING LETTER written by one of the Emperor's ordinance officers during the Spanish War. After recalling the battle of Somosierra [November 30, 1808], the attack on Madrid and congratulating himself on the fact that most of his acquaintances were "out of danger", the Marquis de Vence wrote: "Bullets and cannonballs have a holy respect for me, for which I am grateful [...] The submission of Madrid and the Emperor's beautiful moderation should lead to the pacification of the rest of this Kingdom: I hope that the English will at least wait to reembark in Lisbon until we have arrived there. Before we set off, however, I believe the Emperor will give us time here to catch our breath. [Etc.]" He concludes with this recommendation to his father: "From now on, please address me to: officer of the order of S.[a] M.[ajesté] L'Empereur".
