[IER EMPIRE]. ROCHECHOUART (Louis-Victor-Léon de). AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED "le Comte de Rochechouart" addressed to "mon cher Montulé". 1 p. and 3 lines, dated March 12, 1846 on a double f. of stamped paper (20.5 X 13.5 cm). INTERESTING LETTER in which the Comte de ROCHECHOUART (1788-1858) proposes to a certain Montulé, close to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, to intervene as a conciliator with the Russian Emperor, Tsar Nicholas I: "[...] it seems to me that in the presence of the inconceivable Polish scuffle, and the indiscretions of our dear compatriots, I could be used with the Emperor of Russia, who would be pleased to see a nephew of the Duke of Richelieu, his brother's former aide-de-camp, bring him some words of conciliation. You can be sure of my prudence and discretion [...]". Comte de ROCHECHOUART joined the Russian army in 1805. Aide-de-camp to the Duc de Richelieu and later to Emperor Alexander I, from 1805 to 1812 he took part in the conquest of Bessarabia and Circassia, and fought in the Caucasus and Chechnya. When France invaded Russia in 1812, he was mobilized in General Tormassov's army and took part in the capture of Minsk and the Battle of the Berezina, where he witnessed the tragic crossing of the river by the French army.
