Circle of John Hoppner (1758-1810) Portrait of a gentleman, bust-length, in a black coat oil on canvas 68.5 x 59cm Condition Report: Overall: 81 x 71.5cm Relined. Craquelure with some thinning to the paint. Four small pssible repaired tears to the lower left corner. Some unevenness to the surface along the top edge. Some retouching is apparent to the sitter's left cheek and hair. Not examined under UV light, for a ful report please contact the department.

Attributed to John Hoppner, British 1758-1810- Portrait of lady, traditionally held to be Emma Burward, seated half-length, wearing a white dress and turban in a wooded landscape; oil on canvas, bears a partial printed label inscribed 'John Hoppner R.A. / Portrait of Emma Burward / Sister to Lady Poole and / Harry Cooke. From the Collection / of Mrs Til...[?]' attached to the upper stretcher bar,76.1 x 62.8 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present portrait, depicting a lady in a crisp white costume seated against a dramatic wooded backdrop, very much recalls Hoppner's oeuvre. Indeed, the present work bears a strong resemblance to Hoppner's 'Portrait of a Lady' which was offered at Sotheby's, London, on 12 June 2003 (lot 66), particularly in the loose treatment of the sitter's turban and dress, and the striking contrast between the brightness of the sitter's costume, and the darkness of the background beyond. Similar features are also evident in Hoppner's 'Portrait of the Hon. Mary Rycroft' which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 10 July 1996 (lot 62).

Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present painting recalls Hoppner's work, both in its composition, with a figure seated against the background of a theatrical red curtain, and in its technique, defined by fairly loose and energetic brushstrokes. A similar approach can be seen in a number of works by Hoppner, including his Portrait of a Gentleman in the collection of York Art Gallery [YORAG:791], and his Portrait of a Gentleman which sold at Christie's, London, on 15 April 2015 (lot 569).
