Circle of John Hoppner, RA, British 1758-1810- Portrait of a man, seated half-length, with sideburns and wearing a white stock and black coat; oil on canvas, 76.3 x 64 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The present painting recalls Hoppner's work, both in its composition, with a figure seated against the background of a theatrical red curtain, and in its technique, defined by fairly loose and energetic brushstrokes. A similar approach can be seen in a number of works by Hoppner, including his Portrait of a Gentleman in the collection of York Art Gallery [YORAG:791], and his Portrait of a Gentleman which sold at Christie's, London, on 15 April 2015 (lot 569).
