(Mechelen, 1576 - Amsterdam, between 1631 and 1633) Jephthah and his daughter meet after the battle Oil on panel, 45.5X79.2 cm Provenance: London, Sotheby's, October 29, 1998, lot 103 (as David Vinckboons I) Cologne, Lempertz, September 19, 2018, lot 120 (as David Vinckboons I) Private collection Bibliography: RKD: https://rkd.nl/imageslite/117100 Trained in his father's workshop, the family moved to Antwerp around 1585 likely because of the ongoing religious wars in the southern Netherlands, then moved to Middelburg in about 1586, and finally to Amsterdam where his father Philip became a citizen in 1591. Influenced also by the art of Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Gillis van Coninxloo, Vinckboons painted mainly landscapes and genre scenes, representing, along with Hans Bol and Roelant Savery, a transitional figure between the decorative and imaginative Mannerist tradition and the more naturalistic style typical of seventeenth-century Dutch painting. In particular, he specialized in painting village festivals and outdoor banquets with elegant figures. The work is accompanied by critical entries by Raffaella Colace and Ferdinando Arisi.
