[STASI]: [MIELKE ERICH]: (1907-2000) German communist official who served as head of the East German Ministry for State Security, better known as the Stasi, from 1957-89. A metallic breast badge measuring approximately 3 x 4 cm, featuring the Stasi emblem of a flag and rifle in one raised hand, with the name of the organisation, Ministerium fur Staatssicherheit running across the base, and the Roman numerals XXV at the head, believed to have been awarded by Mielke to Nikolai Emokhonov in recognition of twenty-five years of service to the Stasi. About EX Nikolai Emokhonov - Russian Army General who served as head of the 8th Main Directorate of the KGB of the USSR (responsible for encryption and communication protection), and in 1971 he became deputy chairman of the KGB of the USSR and chairman of the Scientific Technical Council of the KGB of the USSR. Provenance: The present lot is accompanied by five colour photographs, one clearly showing Emokhonov wearing the breast badge, and others of him in the company of Mielke and other individuals.
