HUNGARIAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE:

HUNGARIAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE: TELEKI LASZLO (1811-1861) Count Laszlo Teleki IV de Szék. Hungarian Writer and Statesman. Best remembered as the author of the drama Kegyencz (" The Favourite") in 1841, & PULSZKY FERENC (1814-1897) Ferenc Pulszky de Cselfalva et Lubócz. Hungarian Politician, Writer and nobleman. Pulszky had to flee Hungary in 1849 and was condemned to death in his absence. He could only return to Hungary and resume his political career in 1866 under an imperial amnesty. Both Teleki and Pulszky were ardent defendors of the Magyar cause and both participated in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 leaded by Lajos Kossuth and crashed a year later by the Russian army. A very good L.S., by both Hungarian Politicians while in exile in France, ` Comte Ladislas Teleki´, and ` François Pulszky´, one page, 4to, Paris, 12th February 1849, to the editor of the French newspaper L´Opinion Publique, in French. The letter refers to an article published which was related to Hungary and to a fragment of a Kossuth´s proclamation which Teleki and Pulszky claim not corresponding to him, and stating in part ` Monsieur le rédacteur, nous venons d´adresser à la rédaction du Journal des débats, la réclamation suivante que nous vous prions de vouloir bien insérer dans votre journal... - An article on Hungary inserted in your newspaper on February 12th contains the fragment of ´a proclamation from Mr. Kossuth dated December 24th, in these terms: "The noble Nation of the Maggyars, is not only very brave, it is a very human Nation: the imperialists were small in number, so devoid of weapons, money and food that it was up to us to crush them; we withdrew to avoid blood, because there is no glory in triumphing over the weak. The noble nation of the Maggyars. is not only very humane, but very fair too; the imperialists want us to pay them the costs of the war, and in fact the war has cost them a lot...") Further, and before concluding, the petitioners state categorically ` Sans vouloir faire l´analyse de l´article, nous affirmons que cette prétendue proclamation de Mr. Kossuth n´a jamais existé que dans le cerveau de quelques colporteurs de fausses nouvelles, et que Mr. Kossuth n´a jamais ni prononcé ni écrit ni fait publier aucune parole d´un sens analogue...´ (Translation: " Without wanting to analyze the article, we affirm that this alleged proclamation of Mr. Kossuth has only ever existed in the brains of a few peddlers of false news, and Mr. Kossuth has never spoken, written or published any words of a similar meaning...")
