CARDIGAN EARL OF: (1797-1868) British Lieutenant-General who commanded the Light Brigade during the Crimean War, leading its charge at the Battle of Balaclava (1854). A.L.S., The Earl of Cardigan, in the third person, three pages, 8vo, Deene [Park, Northamptonshire], 15th September 1856, to an unknown correspondent. Cardigan commences by providing his style and title, ´James Thomas, Earl of Cardigan. A Major General in the Army, Inspector General of Cavalry & Knight Commander of the Bath - also a Member of the Legion d´honneur of France, and in possession of four clasps for service in the Crimea´ (the final nine words enhanced in ink, presumably in order to make the original words slightly more legible) and further states ´The Earl of Cardigan is uncertain whether the above details will be of any use´.
