MAURICE SÉBASTIEN LAURENT ( Nancy, 1887- Draveil, 1973). "Bison", c. 1930. Glazed stoneware. Signed. Measurements: 22 x 25,5 x 8,5 cm. French painter and sculptor born in Nancy, Sébastien Laurent studied with Émile Friant at the School of Fine Arts in Nancy. In 1912 he won a medal of honor at the Salon des Artistes Français. He painted genre scenes and regional paintings, often with a symbolist aesthetic. In the thirties, he collaborated with the Bank of France, for which he made several banknotes, such as the 10,000 franc Génie français, as well as banknotes for the Bank of Syria and Lebanon (1939). In 1945, he was commissioned to design a 1,000 franc banknote, which he proposed under the emblem of Athena, but which was finally rejected; in 1985, the Institut d'émission used it to test banknote dispensers. He collaborated with the Mougins earthenware factory, creating sculptures and vases.
