Description

Persian Kashan rug; c. 1920. Wool. 400,000 knots per square meter. It shows wear. Measurements: 310 x 410 cm. The Kashan carpet is a type of Persian carpet, the production was interrupted in Kashan between the Afghan invasion (1722) and the end of the 19th century. The revival of production was made with carpets of a superior quality wool. The earliest examples of this revival are called Kashan Motashemi, probably the name of a craftsman. The traditional techniques of carpet weaving in Kashan were chosen as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010, by Unesco. The carpets of Kashan are among the best in Iran thanks to the quality of their wool, their extraordinarily dense knotting and the beauty of the colors and patterns, the background is almost always decorated with a central medallion that ends at the top and bottom with two floral crowns. The rest of the background is interlaced with flowers and foliage. The border is often decorated with the herati motif in the central band and with rosettes in the secondary bands. It shows wear and tear.
