Description

Samuel, Charles

SAMUEL, Charles Tijl Uilenspiegel and Nele. Late 19th-early 20th c Bronze, red marble base, 61 x 63 x 27 cm, signed "Ch. Samuel" (few sm. scratches, few sm. parts on corners of base missing). The Brussels sculptor Charles Samuel (1862-1939) contributed to the Botanique, Brussels Expo and the triumphal arch of the Cinquantenaire Park. He sculpted a monumental version of "Tijl Uilenspiegel and Nele" in white marble, now installed at the Charles De Costerlaan in Knokke-Heist, and produced another monumental version in bronze for the Monument to Charles De Coster, installed in 1894 at Place Flagey in Brussels. Samuel produced a scaled-down version in bronze in several copies, but ours is the only one known with a red instead of a black/green marble base.
