Classicist gem with a man's head. 19th century. H 2.8 cm. High oval intaglio, chalcedony, head of a man with long sideburns and the signature ΠΙΧΛΕΡ. This is probably a self-portrait of Luigi Pichler (1773 - 1854), a German-Italian gem cutter and medal maker. He was the son of Anton Pichler and the half-brother and pupil of Giovanni Pichler, both of whom were also active as gem cutters. Intact. Provenance: Ex collection Dr. Klaus Marquardt, North Rhine-Westphalia, 1980s to 2009.
