Lot 1 - Large Paestan Pagenstecher lekythos. Circa 340 BC. H 25.4 cm, ø body 9.7 cm. The top of the foot, part of the neck and mouth painted with a glossy tone. In between, a large pictorial field with a young woman with her hair up, holding a dainty, wreath and fruit, and a young man with a walking stick and branch at the side of an altar, naked except for a cloak hanging over his arm. Numerous details in red, white and yellow. With TL analysis! On this special form of lekythoi, which are characterized by their ovoid body and the black-figure technique, which is otherwise found in the 4th century BC almost only on the Panathenaic prize amphorae, see R. Hurschmann, Die Pagenstecher-Lekythoi. JbDAI 29th supplement (1997). Tiny bumps at the mouth, otherwise intact and in very good condition with perfectly preserved colors. Lot 2 - Large Attic red-figure bell krater by the Painter of the Black Thyrsos. 360 - 350 BC H 34.3 cm, ø mouth 34.8 cm. On the front a thiasos with a dancing maenad painted in white and yellow in the center, striking the tympanum. To the sides of her, also wildly dancing satyrs and maenads standing calmly at the edge, the left one with thyrsos and tympanum. At the back three mantled youths. With document from 1976 (copy)! Lot 3 - Apulian red-figure bell krater in the style of the Dijon Painter. 370 - 360 BC H 28.2 cm, ø mouth 30 cm. On the front, to the side of a small altar and laurel branch, on the left a young woman with a thyrsos and a small box, on the other side Eros with a bunch of grapes. Numerous details in white. Two young men in mantles on the reverse. With certificate from 1986 (copy)! Three marginal fragments broken and reattached, with small retouched losses to the broken edges. Provenance: From a French private collection, acquired from Patrice Laporte in 1986.

Lot 4 - Early Lucanian red-figure calpis, in the manner of the Palermo painter. 400 - 390 BC H with added foot 24.1 cm, W with handles 22.3 cm, ø body 17.2 cm. The front with a graceful image of two young women playing ball, the left standing with jackets, the right sitting on a rock with sphendone. Missing foot replaced, broken in the upper area and reassembled, with small missing parts retouched at the broken edges, namely the face of the left woman. Provenance: From the West German collection K. V., acquired from L. Holland, Essen, in the 1980s.

Lot 5 - Attic red-figure pyxis with lid by the painter of Bologna 417. 460 - 450 BC. H with lid 13.4cm, h pyxis 8.5cm, ø lid 11.2cm, ø pyxis 10.5cm. Type A with concave wall and three wide feet. On the body a revolving scene from the women's chamber separated by two Doric columns with an indication of the Regula and Guttae. Between them three standing and one seated woman with spindles and Kalathos making wool. Cf. the pyxis formerly in the Preyss private collection, Munich: Beazley Archive Pottery Database 211141. Lot 6 - Late Apulian skyphos by the Arpi painter. 320 - 310 BC H 12.1 cm, W with handles 20.1 cm, ø body 12.3 cm. On the front in the "Rich Style" a seated young lovers, she with a donation bowl, in front of her Eros with alabastron and branch. On the reverse an advertising scene, on the left a seated young woman with a bowl, on the right in front a young man in a cloak with a wreath in his hand. Details, especially on the front, richly executed in white and yellow. Red overlay on and under the foot. Two fragments of the rim, including a handle, broken in antiquity and repaired using five staples, of which the double holes have been preserved. For the painter, see A. D. Lot 7 - Apulian red-figure kantharos from the workshop of the Baltimore painter. 330 - 320 BC H 23.2 cm, W with handles 20.9 cm. On one side a young woman seated on a rock with a mirror, tympanum and richly filled offering bowl between two thyrsoi. On the other side, also between thyrsoi, an Eros rushing to the left with cista and kalathos. Numerous details executed in white and yellow. As a special feature, this vessel has four appliqués in the form of satyr heads, two at the upper end of the handles and two on the lower outer side of the handles under the leaf-shaped thumb rests. A particularly magnificent example! Pieced together from fragments, small flaws retouched as on one handle. Provenance: Ex private property G. S., Lower Saxony, in family possession since 1966.

Lot 9 - Large Campanian red-figure belly lekythos from a workshop in Cumae. 350 - 340 BC H 24.1 cm, ø body 11.8 cm. In the picture field two young women at the side of an altar. The one on the left is sitting on a rock and holding an object consisting of two sticks with crossbars, the one on the right is standing with a mirror and kalathos. Fruit, probably pomegranates, lies on the decorated altar. Numerous details in white and yellow. Small chip to the foot, tiny chips to the mouth, otherwise intact. Lot 10 - Late Apulian red-figure kothon in the style of the Baltimore Painter. Circa 310 BC. H 13.3 cm, ø body 10.4 cm. Beaker with retracted neck and projecting mouth and two-part bow handle. With the exception of the underside, the clay base of the vessel has a brown coating. On the body, a richly decorated Eros sitting on a rock with a donation bowl - containing fruit and an ivy leaf - and a ball. Richly detailed in white and yellow. With a copy of the invoice from 1978! Tiny flaking to the white, otherwise intact. Provenance: Formerly in the German private collection of H. Herbst, acquired from Charles Ede, London in 1978.

Lot 11 - Attic black-figure cloverleaf toinoche from the workshop of the Painter of the Red Lines. 500 - 480 BC H 16.3 cm, ø body 9.8 cm. Small jug of type 1 with rectangular field. Depicting two crowned, prancing comasts with cloaks over their arms. Wreaths, beards and the eponymous circumferential line below the image field in red. Small part of the upper handle and pieces of the edge of the trefoil mouth missing and have been replaced and retouched. Provenance: In the private collection of P. Lot 13 - Attic white-ground and black-figure cylinder lekythos in the style of the Haimon Painter. 480 - 460 BC H 19.6 cm, ø body 6.7 cm. The figurine depicts a central scene from the Eleusinian Mysteries. Flanked by the goddess Demeter and her daughter Persephone, Triptolemos sits on a winged chariot with ears of corn in his hands - the gifts of the gods for the cultivation of mankind. Lot 30 - Slender Campanian belly lekythos of glossy earthenware with stamped decoration. Early 4th century BC. H 15.1 cm, ø body 6.4 cm. The body carved with lancet-shaped opposite leaves, the downward-facing leaves decorated with a dense sequence of circular stamps. Red coating on and under the foot. A beautiful, elegant example of this rare lustre earthenware! On the question of origin from the Greek motherland, see the piece in Heidelberg, University Z27: Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum 4 p. 80 with pl. 185, 10; Beazley Archive Pottery Database 9014825. Such an origin is also assumed for the example in the Staatliche Antikensammlungen, Munich NI 6499 ( elish? ). However, the decoration and red coating suggest that it was made in Magna Graecia. Lot 34 - Askos of the Gaudo culture with silver cross. Chalcolithic, 1st half 3rd mill. H 12.1cm, l 17.4cm. Dark brown impasto. Rectangular vessel with small bow handle and large spout. Incised decoration on the handle, spout and the ring below the spout. Two silver stripes in a cross-shaped arrangement on the front. With certificate of authenticity from Galerie Günter Puhze, Freiburg im Breisgau! Published in: S. Cassani (ed.), The Art of the Italic Peoples from 3000 to 300 BC. Exhibition Geneva (1993) p. 286 no. 181 (copy enclosed). The Gaudo culture in southern Campania from the Copper Age shows influences from the Aegean and even Anatolia, particularly in the area of pottery and weapons. It is assumed that they were predominantly nomadic shepherds, as hardly any settlements are known, but necropolises are. Metal finds, especially those made of silver, are extremely rare, see Cassani op. cit. Jug with cloverleaf mouth and high bow handle in the shape of a young woman's head with twisted temple hair and high headdress. Lot 36 - Roman Aco beaker with "Dance of Death". Early Roman Imperial period, late 1st century BC - early 1st century AD. H 8.8cm, ø mouth 7.75cm. Molded red-brown terracotta. The steep-walled, slightly convex beaker depicts a circle of eight skeletons on the outside, separated by stylized thyrsoi. As attributes, they hold various tools and perhaps musical instruments and toiletries in their hands, some of which appear to be talking to each other. Very interesting piece! Comparative literature enclosed! Cf. the famous Modioli from the silver treasure of Boscoreale with very similar motifs, which are now in the Musée du Louvre in Paris. Lot 64 - Torso of an armored statue, 2nd half 2nd century A.D. White, fine crystalline marble. H 71cm. Lower life-size. A semicircular depression has been carved at the base of the neck, which was used to hold an operational head. Both arms are broken at the upper arms, the legs below the hem of the garment. The clothing consists of a short-sleeved tunic and anatomical armor with a Gorgon head on the chest. A ribbed military bandage, a so-called cingulum, is tied around the stomach. The round flaps at the lower edge of the armor are decorated with various motifs, including an elephant's head, a ram's head, a palmette and a helmet. Lot 64.A - Torso of Diana of Ephesus. Late 2nd century AD, Asia Minor. H approx. 61cm. Fragment of the upper body of a life-size statue made of white, fine crystalline marble. The chest section with the bent, half arms and the two upper zones of the goddess's ependyte are preserved; the formerly inserted head is missing. The back is heavily sintered; only a narrow strip of fabric ending in fringes and falling down onto the back is visible. The chest area is adorned with a pectoral consisting of two necklaces with pendants: lanceolate leaves hang from the upper chain; in the center, a downward-opening crescent encloses a rosette. Stylized acorns hang from the lower chain, alternating with flowers (immortelles?). The lower chest and belly area is covered by egg-shaped formations lying on top of each other like scales, which are interpreted as 'bull's testicles'. These formations are smaller towards the bottom. The ependytes, a cloak-like apron (usually made of metal) worn by the goddess over the chiton and fastened at the back with a belt, has two zones, each with three fields in relief. The upper cassettes depict bull protomes, the three lower ones show rosettes. On the bull's testicles, see G. Lot 65 - Statuette of Asclepius. 1st century A.D. White, fine crystalline marble. H 31.5 cm. Healing god standing on an oval, profiled base as a bearded, strong man with luxuriantly flowing head hair. He wears a fabric-rich himation wrapped around his hips, one end of which is draped over his left shoulder from behind and falls down over his chest. The other end forms a triangle between his hip and left knee. The right arm, which is preserved up to the middle of the forearm, was slightly outstretched. The hand apparently held the serpent's staff, traces of which have been preserved on the plinth, especially the end of the serpent's tail. The statuette is of the so-called Asclepius Campana type, whose eponymous replica comes from the Campana collection and is now in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. However, the standing motif is reversed. The statuette in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptothek Inv. 1418, which comes from a villa in Rimini, is related in the setting of the deep hole in the curled ends of the curls. LIMC II s.v. Lot 66 - Head of a bearded god. Roman Imperial period, late 2nd century A.D. White, fine crystalline marble, h 25 cm. Idealized head of a father deity with long, thick hair that springs up in thick curls above the muscular forehead, but is otherwise combed forward from the back of the head and frames the face in an irregular bulge. The mighty beard consists of thick bundles of curls with twirled tips. A bandage is indicated in the hair, which is only cursorily worked out at the back of the head. Broken at the neck, bumped nose, otherwise only minimal damage on a largely perfectly preserved surface. Provenance: Ex Austrian private collection C.M. Lot 67 - Head of Honos. 2nd half 2nd century AD. H 13cm. Patinated fine crystalline marble. Almost full-size relief head of a woman facing right with a long, orientalizing corkscrew hairstyle held together by a bandage. There is a broken edge on the left side facing the relief ground. With certificate from Dei Bardi Art! Due to the seemingly oriental influences, attempts have been made to interpret the head as a portrait of Cleopatra VII of Egypt. However, an iconographically very similar figure can be found on a well-known wedding sarcophagus in San Lorenzo fuori le mura, where this figure appears in the bride's entourage. Scholarly literature interprets this figure as Honos, the god of honor. He often appears on historical reliefs as the emperor's companion, but also appears in the private sphere. Lot 71 - Ostotheca for the deceased wife of Apellas. Roman Imperial period, 1st century A.D. H 28cm, W 48cm, D 35cm. White, fine crystalline marble. Box-shaped shrine, the front decorated with elaborate fruit garlands hanging in the center above a bull's head and on the right corner above a ram's head. On the sides and back, the garlands are only executed in bosses. A smooth, convex profile forms the lower end. Inside, the box is only crudely lined. An inscription is engraved on the front at the top edge and on the bottom profile: [...]Η ΚΑΤΟΙΧΟΜΕΝΗ / ΑΠΕΛΛΑΣ ΔΙΟΝΥΣΙΟΥ ΕΦΕΣΙΟΣ ZΗ ("Apellas, the Ephesian, son of Dionysius [had this made] for the deceased [...] during his lifetime."). Lot 80 - Circus horse. Roman imperial period, 2nd century AD. H 16cm. Hollow cast. Chariot top with a base plate with a profile on the front with a rectangular spout at the bottom and a hook at the front. The calmly striding horse with slightly raised right front leg is bridled. The neck is apparently in a plaid collar with a crest at the bottom, under which a border peeps out. A plume of feathers is waving on the forehead. For the depiction, see Caesars and Gladiators. Lot 82 - Venus with the weapons of Mars. Roman imperial period, 2nd half of the 2nd century AD. H 15.9cm. Cast bronze. The naked goddess with four long plaits and a neck bun holds a pseudo-Corinthian helmet in her right hand and the remains of a parazonium in her left. Furthermore, the right hand is pierced and originally held a lance, while the left hand rested on a shield that is now lost. The affair of Venus, goddess of love and wife of Vulcan, with Mars, god of war, ended in scandal on Olympus, as the betrayed husband bound the adulterous couple to their love bed with invisible chains and presented them to the assembly of the gods. In Roman times in particular, the image of Venus with the weapons of the god of war became a symbol of the disarming power of love in the truest sense of the word. Beautiful matt green patina, left foot broken, mounted on a black plastic stand. Provenance: Ex collection W.
