Male ancestor figure singiti. Hemba, D. R. Congo. H 58cm. With beard and freely carved arms and typical cross hairstyle, hands on hips (inv. no. 8.705). This figure, which radiates calm and determination, conveys the pride and genealogical continuation of an entire clan. It belongs to a sculptural genre called singiti and was created to honor important deceased ancestors; they were venerated in a special shrine-case, prayed before and regularly provided with offerings - a material way through which communication between the dead and the living could be maintained. Blackish, shiny patina, legs heavily damaged by termite damage, minor restoration to the reverse.
