Male ancestor figure singiti. Hemba, D. R. Congo. H 58cm. With beard and freely carved arms and typical cross hairstyle, hands on hips (inv. no. 8.705). Exhibited at: 4e Salon International d'Art Tribal , Paris, 14-17.09.2001; Arts-Kunst: Primitifs / Primitive / Primitieve Brussels, Belgium, 20 - 21.06.1991. Published in: K.-F. This figure, which radiates calm and determination, conveys the pride and genealogical continuation of an entire clan. It belongs to a sculptural genre called singiti and was created to honor important deceased ancestors; they were venerated in a special shrine-case, prayed before and regularly provided with offerings - a material way through which communication between the dead and the living could be maintained. Blackish, shiny patina, legs heavily damaged by termite damage, minor restoration to the reverse.
