Description
Rare scissor oracle of the West Pende, galukoji. D.R. Congo. L 33cm (extended). Made of scissor-shaped bamboo sticks connected with plant fibers and a head of the mask type mbuya gabuku, decorated at the end with feathers of the bird of paradise. Among the various divination instruments, the galukoji is considered the most dramatic; it is apparently not used for accusations, but only for illnesses. It is most commonly found in the southern area between the Kwilu and the Loange. When using it, the diviner places the instrument upside down on his lap; he places his fingers between the rotating crosses and recites names and formulas. When the name of the person in question is called, the head of the galukoji protrudes upwards near the diviner's head. Intact. Provenance: ex Gorny and Mosch auction 275, December 16, 2020, lot 453; ex Lempertz Brussels, auction January 22, 2013.
