Watercolor. Bamum, Cameroon, c. 1900. W 82cm, H 68cm, D 1.5cm. Presumably depicting the ancestral gallery of the Sultans of Foumban. Painted black and red on slightly yellowed paper and framed by typical motifs that can also be found on the sacred fabrics ndop. A similarly designed watercolour depicting the court of Sultan Njoya was acquired at the same time by Karl-Ferdinand Schädler (from the same dealer) (illustrated in K.F. Schaedler Afrikanische Kunst (1975) fig. 69, p. 199) and later auctioned at Christie's (13 November 1985, lot 197). Several losses in the margins, otherwise intact, framed in a black wooden frame. Provenance: Acquired from Klaus Rüdiger, 1971 in Foumban.
