Female figure of the Nago (Anago). Benin / Nigeria. H 57.5cm. Standing on a round base, holding a spherical object in her left hand and a staff in her right hand, black-brown partly encrusted sacrificial patina. The figure of Nago being assessed here reveals a mixture of styles: The head, for example, shows clear Yoruba characteristics, as is the case with most figures, while the slender, elegantly curved body has little in common with the corpulent conception of Yoruba artworks - a clear criterion of Nago sculptures, which are so rarely encountered. It can therefore be considered a stroke of luck to find a characteristic Nago figure that is also characterized by balanced proportions and a gracefully curved line.
