Khmer statue of the Buddha in Angkor Wat style. 12th century AD. H 56.9 cm and with stand 66.2 cm. Brown sandstone. The Buddha wears a short, pleated sampot with fishtail pleats at the front and a jeweled belt. Head, right arm, left forearm and lower legs missing, mounted on a beautiful metal stand. Provenance: From the German collection F. M.; previously in an old German collection, acquired between 1973 and 1975.

Tibetan Buddha, XIX century. Bronze, with set crystals. It shows signs of use and wear. Measurements: 19 x 12 x 9 cm. Representation of a seated Buddha performing a mudra of touching the earth with his right hand. He is seated on a synthesized lotus flower. The elongated lobes of his ears symbolize wisdom. Gautama Sakyamuni Buddha was the Buddha of compassion who, having reached the highest evolutionary perfection, turned suffering into happiness for all living beings. Born around 560 B.C., his father was a raja who ruled the northeastern province of India. At the age of 29, the young prince gave up his life of luxury, as he felt compelled to purify his body and turn it into an instrument of the mind by ridding it of earthly temptations. Here crowns his head a headdress with the representation of Buddha representing infinite wisdom. The elegance and spirituality of Buddha's form is well conceived in this Tibetan representation.

Hotei or Buddha of Happiness. China, Rose Family, mid-20th century. Enamelled porcelain. Measurements: 26 x 19,5 x 11 cm. Enamelled porcelain sculpture representing a smiling Buddha, also called Hotei or Buddha of happiness. Several children climb on his naked belly and tickle him all over his body. Popularly known as the "Fat Buddha", his mythological origin dates back to the time of the Chinese Liang Dynasty. He is believed to have been a Buddhist monk who, due to his benevolent nature, came to be regarded as an incarnation of the bodhisattva Maitreya. The polychromy is part of the Rose Family style, based on the introduction of new glazes, the most famous of which is pink, after which the style is named. Other new colours were also added, such as opaque yellow, white and the now independent black, since until then, in order to fix the black glaze, it had to be covered with a glaze of another colour, usually translucent green.
