Description

Schist relief with Buddha. Gandhara, 2nd - 3rd century A.D. H 14.5cm, L 24.5cm, D max. 3cm. Made of gray schist with slight rounding. Depicted in the center is Buddha sitting in meditation on a throne under a canopy of leaves, his right hand in abhaya mudra. On both sides adorants with folded hands and ornamental pillars. Illustrated in: S. Winkelmann, K. Marquardt, Ancient Art from Afghanistan (2013) p. 369, illus. p. 489 (no. Ck 2.1.317.P). Fragment, set into a wooden base.
