Description

Large head of a composite idol. Bactria, Margiana, 2600 - 1800 B.C. H 16cm. Made of white calcite. The eyes pierced and originally inlaid with another material (bitumen). A round opening at the back of the head to accommodate a hairpiece or headdress made of another material and curled hair at the nape of the neck. Widened and rounded at the lower end for insertion into a body. Remains of sinter, minimally bumped, hairpiece missing, intact. Provenance: Ex collection Dr. Klaus Marquardt, North Rhine-Westphalia, 1980s to 2009.
