Jug. Eastern Mediterranean, 3rd - 4th century AD. H 16.6cm. Bluish clear glass. Slender, cylindrical body with slightly concave base, flat shoulder, cylindrical neck and funnel-shaped mouth. A thick thread ring under the rim. One strap handle pulled from the shoulder and attached to the neck, bent almost to the rim. Intact. Provenance: ex Gorny & Mosch 300, 2023, lot 287; ex collection Dr. Wiegand, Bavaria, collection period 1960s to 2005.

Roman glass balsamarium or unguentarium, ca. 1st-3rd century CE. With a truncated, conical body, a tall, tubular neck, and an outsplayed rim. Of a light yellow-green coloration. Bottles of this kind were likely used for oils or perfumes as the contents could be slowly poured out drop by drop. They are sometimes referred to as "tear bottles" as it is sometimes believed that they may have been used to catch the tears of mourners and placed in burial tombs, where they have sometimes been found. Height: 6 1/2 in x diameter: 3 1/4 in.
