Large cinerary urn with lid. Roman Imperial period, western Mediterranean, 1st - 2nd century AD. H with lid 25cm. Bluish clear glass, blown. Bellied, handleless pot with domed base and wide horizontal lip. The lid flat, with a slender handle in the center. Broken and restored. Provenance: Ex collection Dr. Wiegand, Bavaria, collection period 1960s to 2005.

In the history of Roman coinage the quinary, that is, the half denarius, has always played a marginal role being minted only occasionally and on special occasions. While quinari from the Republican age are almost all very common, they begin to become rare in the Imperial age until they become very rare in the third century. Chromolithography on the lid: fifteen scenes from Roman history; gilded, embossed frame. The box contains three puzzle boards, size 31.5 x 36 cm. Roman history puzzle. Each of the three boards, glued to wood and cut into jigsaw pieces, is illustrated on the same principle as the lithograph on the lid: fifteen scenes from Roman history in five horizontal rows, each with a caption and a number. The cover plate is not reproduced as a puzzle. These sixty images were used by Poulain chocolate to create advertising cards, chromolithographed and embossed: six series of ten subjects.

Of pear shape, the round body supported on a splaying foot, rising to a broad neck with animal-mask handles suspending flattened rings. The central band cast with taotie masks beneath a band archaic scroll, and the foot cast with lappets. The cover cast with a diamond-shape pattern and lappet band around it flaring rim. Condition: Extensive wear, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations. Nicks, dents, and losses. Presenting very well. The bronze with a rich patina with malachite, cuprite, and azurite encrustations. Provenance: From a private collection in Anchorage, Alaska, acquired at Rob Michiels, Bruges, 22 February 2023, lot 1081 (sold for EUR 4,335), dated “Eastern Zhou or earlier”.
