Description

Scroll seal with introductory scene. Old Babylonian, ca. 2003 - 1595 B.C. H 2.3 cm, ø 1.2 cm. Lapis lazuli. Bearded male figure with broad-brimmed cap and weapon on belt in front of an enthroned deity with falbel robe. A figure standing to the left of the man, probably the initiating goddess, was chiseled out later; the three-line inscription between the man and the god was probably also added later: "Ishtaran-muballit, / son of Yibbi-Ashdu, / servant of the (god) [...]". With a copy of the invoice! With unrolling! Published in: E. Rehm, Rollsiegel aus einer hessischen Privatsammlung, Ugarit-Forschungen 35, 2003, no. 40. Heavily rubbed.
