Description

Late antique clay lamp with ram (agnus dei). North Africa, 4th - 5th century A.D. Type Hayes II. L 14cm, H 5.3cm. Made of light red clay with light red coating. Cone-shaped handle, ovoid body, rounded snout with firing hole, two filling holes in the mirror. On the mirror a ram and in front of it a Christogram in a laurel wreath. Alternating filled circles, triangles and leaves on the shoulder. In combination with the Christogram, the ram takes on the Christian meaning of the Lamb of God (agnus dei). Traces of sinter, tiny flaking, reassembled at the mirror. Provenance: Ex private collection H.L., Rhineland, since before 2000.
