Hermes. Early Imperial period, Julio-Claudian. 1st century A.D. H 8.8cm. Full cast. Naked youth standing in contrapposto. A cloak rests on his left shoulder, falling down to the side and enveloping his left arm. The lowered right hand holds a purse, the left hand probably formerly a kerykeion. A winged petasos on his head. Dark toning, intact. Provenance: From a French private collection. Acquired at the Bérard & Peron auction. Previously in an old French collection from at least the 1970s (according to the design of the base).

Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe. Condition: With signs of age and use, tiny losses, repairs, pitting and iridescent weathering along with encrustation.
