Head of a bearded god. Roman Imperial period, late 2nd century A.D. White, fine crystalline marble, h 25 cm. Idealized head of a father deity with long, thick hair that springs up in thick curls above the muscular forehead, but is otherwise combed forward from the back of the head and frames the face in an irregular bulge. The mighty beard consists of thick bundles of curls with twirled tips. A bandage is indicated in the hair, which is only cursorily worked out at the back of the head. Broken at the neck, bumped nose, otherwise only minimal damage on a largely perfectly preserved surface. Provenance: Ex Austrian private collection C.M.
