Large Corinthian black-figure alabastron of the panther-bird group. Early Corinthian, 625 - 600 BC. H 18.6 cm, ø body 9.7 cm. The body surrounded by rosettes with two opposing cockerels and a snake between them. Numerous details in red. Cf. on the painter D. A. Amyx, Corinthian Vase-Painting of the Archaic Period (1988) pp. 93-94 and pl. 43, 1-2. Pieced together from fragments, with small retouched losses to the broken edges, the painting on one cock somewhat chipped. Provenance: From the German private collection of H. W. (1931-2018), acquired on the German art market before 2000; in Germany since before 1977.
