An icon with the Pokrov of the Mother of God ('Solnocnaya'). Russia. Late 18th century. Tempera on panel. Certificate: Prof. Dr. E. Voordeckers, Ghent, 16.6.1970, R.781.845 The Mother of God is represented full-length and frontally, both hands folded in the Old Christian orante posture, with over her arms the white mapherion, the head veil kept as a relic in the Blachernen Church of Constantinople (Istanbul). This depiction is the core of the Russian Pokrov icons on which the protection of the Mother of God over the city and a miracle performed in honor of the Byzantine poet Romanos Nelodos are simultaneously commemorated. This icon is derived directly from a Pokrov icon. Single kovcheg, protected from warping by two wedges, scribed and dovetailed into the back of the panel. 31.1 x 26.1 cm
