Bronze inkwell with atlases France, c. 1915, stamped mark S in octagon for Susse Frères and number 21 on the base, brown patinated bronze, cylindrical body with retracted shaft and flared stand, neck decorated with atlases all round, partly with allegorical attributes such as cogwheel and hammer, symbolically supporting the upper rim, hinged hinged lid, removable brass vessel below and two-part glass insert (one part broken), signs of age and wear, h 13.5 cm.

One of the most accurate French atlases of the 18th century. This copy is the corrected and enlarged edition by Charles François Delamarche. It includes a title-frontispiece engraved by Ch. Baquoy, 4 tables, 12 maps representing ancient geography, and 101 maps (out of 105) with colored outlines representing modern geography: Mappemonde, continents, Archipelago of the East Indies, Empire of China, New France or Canada, Cours de l'Ohio, Virginie et Maryland, West Indies, United States, or Judea with two plans of Jerusalem in vignettes. Good condition inside. Very worn binding. The Routes of Spain, Italy, Turkey and the map of Paris are missing.

Specimen in very good condition except to the first volume: insignificant small woodworm hole at the inner margin of the first twenty or so maps affecting the printing area but not particularly noticeable, maps 32-34 and 37 with small gore at the lower margin; to the second: tear at the lower margin of maps 1, 12 and 13 without loss of engraving. First edition of the atlas by brothers Paolo and Francesco Santini, considered one of the most important universal atlases printed in Italy in the 18th century. The editors substantially reproduced, retaining toponyms and inscriptions in French, the Atlas Universel published in Paris in 1757 by Gilles and Didier Robert de Vaugondy, but made several changes especially to the maps of the Italian regions.
