Thunberg (1743-1828) was Swedish surgeon and botanist and a follower Linnaeus. He entered the Dutch East India Company (V.O.C.) as a surgeon on board the Schoonzicht. Thunberg sailed in 1775 for Batavia in Java and finally ended up at the Dutch trading post at Nagasaki, where he stayed on Deshima island. His freedom to move around and study was very limited and only in 1776 was he permitted to travel though Japan to Yedo together w. a Dutch delegation under Arend Willem Feith. (total 4)

Rare. -and De Reis van Joris van Spilbergen, Amst., J.H. Bussy, 1952. Spilbergen, in command of a small flotilla of six Dutch East India Company ships, sailed for the Moluccas via the Straits of Magellan in 1614, thereby proving that it was possible to reach Java from the east via Cape Horn. This was the first attempted circumnavigation of the globe carried out with the official support of the Dutch government. This work is an account of his five year voyage, and the engravings consist of charts, views of ports, islands and native peoples, and sea battles. Schrijver, ca. 1730. In mediocre condition, w. (repaired) tears, folds and stains and sm. portions lacking. Extremely rare broadside, not in Landwehr, V.O.C. *The European occupiers of Sri Lanka (named Ceylon at the time) believed that the tombs of Adam and Eve were located at the place now known as Mulkirigala (or Mulgirigala). The mentioned author of the text Christiaan Hansz is probably the German author Christoph Langhansz who was employed by the V.O.C. and published Neue Ost-Indische Reise in 1705, also giving an account of Ceylon.

The sheet neatly re-margined on left and right upper halves, these oblique parts a bit yellowed, otherwise a very good copy. The fictitious lake Parima and El Dorado, the City of Gold, are indicated in lower right corner.

(2) Dioecesis Africana. (3) Dioecesis Hispaniarum. (4) Dioecesis Orientis. (5) Orbis Vetus Ubi Primae Ecclesia Sedes. (6) Roman Imperium Qua Orientale fait. All approx. 37 x 44 cm. All w. centre fold as publ., sl. browned, a few other (mostly marginal) defects. Spenheim (1632-1701) was one of the most important German geographers and historians of sacred geography and history. From 1672 until his death he was the chief librarian at the University of Leiden. These maps are from his most well-known work. (total 6)
